Short answer
No, social media is not haram in itself. It is a tool, and its ruling depends on how you use it. Using it to keep in touch, learn, work or share good is permitted and can be rewarded. Using it for backbiting, looking at haram, showing off, spreading rumours or wasting prayer times is sinful.
Social media is mubah (permitted) in itself, as a means. Each use takes its own ruling: good uses are permitted or rewarded, and uses that involve haram looking, speech, music or deception are haram.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Islamic law judges tools by their use. A phone can be used to read the Quran or to watch indecent content. The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him say good or stay silent. Every post, comment and message is speech, and the Quran says hearing, sight and heart will all be questioned.
Common sins online:
- backbiting, mocking and gossip in comments and group chats (see gossip);
- looking at immodest pictures and videos, and reels with music;
- sharing news or 'hadith' without checking (see sharing unverified news);
- flirting with non-mahrams in DMs (see talking to a non-mahram online);
- showing off wealth, worship or looks, which invites envy and kills sincerity;
- fake accounts and catfishing (see catfishing).
Good uses: staying close to family, learning from trusted scholars, running a halal business, sharing beneficial reminders, and supporting good causes.
Practical limits that help: set app timers, turn off notifications at prayer times, unfollow accounts that pull you to haram, and do not scroll in bed. The Prophet ﷺ said that part of a person's good Islam is leaving what does not concern him. If an app keeps leading you to sin and you cannot control it, deleting it is the safer choice. For posting photos, see taking pictures, and for earning from content, YouTube income.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Israa 17:36
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
What we look at and listen to online will be asked about.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6018
Sahih... من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فليقل خيرا أو ليصمت ...
"Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him say good or keep silent."
Posts and comments are speech and follow this rule.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2317
Graded sahih... من حسن إسلام المرء تركه ما لا يعنيه ...
"Part of the excellence of a person's Islam is leaving what does not concern him."
Endless scrolling is a clear case of what does not concern you.
