Short answer
Nothing extra is needed to become Muslim: a man says the shahada like anyone else. After that, some duties apply to men in particular: the Friday prayer, praying in congregation where possible, circumcision if it is safe, covering from navel to knee, keeping a beard, and not wearing gold or silk. Take them step by step.
Jumu'ah is fard on adult, healthy, resident men, and praying in congregation is a stressed sunnah close to wajib. Circumcision is a stressed sunnah, not a condition of Islam, and may be left by an adult if it would cause harm. A man's awrah is from the navel to the knee, keeping the beard a fist's length is wajib, and gold and silk clothing are haram for men.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i
- Circumcision is obligatory for men, including adult converts, unless it would cause harm.
- Hanbali
- Circumcision is obligatory for men, unless the man fears harm from it.
Explanation
The shahada is the same for men and women, and it makes you Muslim straight away. See how to convert. What follows is what a man will learn over the next weeks and months, not a list to finish before you begin.
- Friday prayer: attending Jumu'ah at the mosque each Friday is fard for men. See how to pray Jumu'ah.
- Congregation: men are encouraged to pray the daily prayers at the mosque when they can.
- Circumcision: a sunnah and a sign of Islam. It is not a condition for becoming Muslim. A convert who can do it safely should; an older man for whom a doctor advises against it may leave it. See is circumcision mandatory.
- Awrah: cover from navel to knee, in prayer and in public. See awrah.
- Beard: let it grow; see beard length.
- Gold and silk: not worn by men. A gold wedding ring can be swapped for silver, titanium or steel. See is gold haram for men.
Start with the five daily prayers, using how to pray. Find a mosque where brothers will help you learn, and an imam you can ask. If you are married, read when one spouse converts. Change comes in steps, and Allah loves the deeds that are steady even if small.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Jumu'a 62:9
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
