Questions Marriage and family

Can a Muslim get married in a church?

Checked by our team

Short answer

A Muslim should not take part in a Christian wedding rite, with vows in the name of the Trinity and a priest's blessing. A Muslim man who marries a Christian woman should hold an Islamic nikah with offer and acceptance before Muslim witnesses. If the conditions of nikah were met in a church, the marriage may be valid, but joining the religious rite is sinful.

Hanafi position

Taking part in the worship or religious rites of another faith is haram, and a Muslim may not make vows that contain shirk. Validity is judged by the conditions of nikah: if offer, acceptance and the required witnesses were present, the nikah stands even though the setting was wrong. A Muslim woman cannot marry a Christian man in any setting.

Shafi'i
The witnesses must be two just Muslim men, and the Christian bride's own wali, such as her Christian father, contracts the marriage for her.

Explanation

A Muslim man may marry a chaste Christian or Jewish woman (5:5). See marrying a Christian or Jewish woman. Interfaith couples are often under pressure from one family to hold a church wedding, and from the other to hold a nikah.

The problem with a church wedding is not the building but the rite. A Christian wedding service is an act of worship: vows made before God in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, prayers to Jesus as Lord, and a priest's blessing. A Muslim cannot affirm these, and joining in another faith's worship is haram. The Quran's principle is "for you is your religion, and for me is my religion" (109:6). Attending a relative's church wedding as a guest is a separate question. See attending a church wedding.

Is the marriage valid? In the Hanafi school, validity depends on the nikah conditions, not the place. Abu Hanifa and Abu Yusuf accepted two Christian witnesses when the bride is Christian, so a ceremony with clear vows may count as a nikah. But that is uncertain, and the sin of the rite remains. Scholars advise holding a proper nikah with Muslim witnesses in every case.

  • Hold the nikah at home, in a mosque or a neutral venue.
  • Do the civil registration separately. See court marriage.
  • Her family can host a celebration without religious rites.
  • A Muslim woman may not marry a Christian man in a church or anywhere else. See why not.

Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:5

This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.
