Love in Islam, in the words of the Quran and the Prophet ﷺ
Islam speaks about love more than many people expect. Allah calls Himself Al-Wadud, the Loving (85:14). The Quran says the believers are "stronger in love for Allah" (2:165), and the Prophet ﷺ made love between people part of faith itself: "you will not believe until you love one another" (Sahih Muslim 54). He also spoke openly of his love for his wives, Khadijah and Aishah.
Three kinds of love in these quotes
Love for Allah and His love for us. It is shown by following the Prophet ﷺ (3:31) and by voluntary worship, until Allah loves the servant (Bukhari 6502).
Love for Allah's sake. Loving a friend for his goodness, not for what he gives you, earns the shade of the Throne (Muslim 2566). The sunnah is to tell him (Abu Dawud 5124).
Love in marriage. Affection and mercy are a sign of Allah (30:21), and the Prophet ﷺ said nothing is better for two people who love each other than marriage (Ibn Majah 1847).
Love quotes we left out
Many "Islamic love quotes" online are lines from Rumi, modern poems, or advice with no author, shown over a picture of a mosque. Some are beautiful, but they are not Quran or hadith, and a few are presented as hadith when they are not. We only list words we can trace to a book. If you want to share a love poem, share it as a poem, with its poet's name.
Love is part of faith. Allah is Al-Wadud, the Loving (85:14), believers love Allah most (2:165), they love each other for His sake (Muslim 54), and spouses are given affection and mercy (30:21).
