Guide

Success in Islam, and how the Quran defines it

The Quran's word for success is falah, the word the adhan calls you to five times a day: hayya alal-falah, come to success. It does not mean wealth or fame. "He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself" (87:14), and the final success is to be "drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise" (3:185). The hadith add that a person who has Islam, enough to live on and contentment with it has already succeeded (Muslim 1054).

Effort and trust together

None of this means sitting back. The Prophet ﷺ praised the strong believer who is keen on what benefits him and does not give up (Muslim 2664), told the man to tie his camel and then trust Allah (Tirmidhi 2517), and said that Allah loves a job done well. Tawakkul, trust in Allah, is the heart's part; work is the body's part. Shuayb put it in one line: "my success is not but through Allah" (11:88).

Quotes we left out

Questions

Good to know

What is success in Islam?

Falah: purifying the soul (87:14, 91:9) and, in the end, being saved from the Fire and entering Paradise (3:185). Worldly success is good when it serves that.

What is a good Islamic quote about success?

"Successful is the one who has accepted Islam, is given enough to live on, and is made content by Allah" (Muslim 1054), and "my success is not but through Allah" (11:88).

Does Islam say to work hard or to trust Allah?

Both. "Tie it, and trust in Allah" (Tirmidhi 2517). The Prophet ﷺ praised working with your own hands (Bukhari 2072).

Is the hadith "Allah loves that when you do a job you do it well" authentic?

It is reported by al-Bayhaqi and Abu Ya'la from Aishah, and al-Albani graded it hasan because of its supporting chains.
