Islamic sayings about marriage, and what they ask of us
The Quran describes marriage in one ayah that couples have read at their nikah for fourteen centuries: Allah created spouses "that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy" (30:21). The hadith add the practical side. The Prophet ﷺ measured a man's goodness by how he treats his wife, helped with the work at home, and told fathers to accept a suitor whose religion and character are good.
Popular marriage quotes we left out
"Marriage is half of the religion." This is reported by al-Bayhaqi with chains that are weak on their own; some scholars, such as al-Albani, graded it hasan because of its supporting reports. See Is marriage half of the deen?
"Where there is love, there is life" and "Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none" are shared online as Islamic sayings. Neither is a hadith: the second is from Shakespeare.
Lines credited to Rumi, Ali ibn Abi Talib or Ibn al-Qayyim with no book named are left out until we can trace them.
How we checked these quotes
The Quran Arabic is copied from the Uthmani text with the Sahih International translation, and part-ayat are marked. Each hadith names its collection, number and grading, and its Arabic is checked against the text of that collection. The English of the hadith is our own plain translation.
