Short answer
Yes. A husband who clearly says "I divorce you" to his wife as a joke has given a talaq, and it counts. The Prophet ﷺ said that three things are serious whether meant seriously or in jest: nikah, talaq and taking a wife back. Quoting someone, reading a text aloud or teaching an example without addressing your wife is not a talaq. The four schools agree.
Talaq spoken in jest (hazl) with clear words takes effect, because the hadith makes it binding whatever the intention. Unclear words (kinayah), such as 'go to your family', need the intention of divorce, so they do not count when said playfully without that intention. Merely repeating or quoting a sentence (hikayah) is not a talaq.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Allah says, "do not take the verses of Allah in jest" (2:231), in the middle of the ayahs on divorce. The Prophet ﷺ said: three things are serious when meant seriously and serious when meant as a joke: nikah, talaq and taking back a wife. Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi record it, and hadith scholars grade it hasan. Marriage protects a family's honour and children, so it cannot be switched on and off by a laugh.
Situations people ask about:
- Joking in front of friends or to tease her: "I divorce you" counts.
- Typed in a chat as a joke or a test: clear written words count. See divorce by text.
- Repeated three times as a joke: in the Hanafi school this is three talaqs. See three talaq at once.
- Quoting what someone else said, reading a fiqh book aloud or explaining the rules: not a talaq, because you are not divorcing anyone.
- A threat such as "I will divorce you": a promise about the future, not a talaq.
- Indirect words said playfully without intending divorce: not a talaq in the Hanafi school.
If it has happened: after one or two talaqs that were not final, the husband can take his wife back during her iddah, by saying so or by resuming intimacy. See talaq raj'i and ba'in. Do not guess. Give a mufti the exact words, how many times, and the situation. And never joke with talaq again.

The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:231
And when you divorce women and they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or release them according to acceptable terms, and do not keep them, intending harm, to transgress [against them]. And whoever does that has certainly wronged himself. And do not take the verses of Allah in jest. And remember the favor of Allah upon you and what has been revealed to you of the Book and wisdom by which He instructs you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is Knowing of all things.
Divorce is not a joking matter.
Sunan Abi Dawud 2194
Graded hasan...
"Three things are serious when meant seriously and serious when meant as a joke: marriage, divorce and taking back a wife."
A joking talaq takes effect.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Talaq, on whose talaq takes effect. The talaq of one who jokes takes effect.
- Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn Abidin), Kitab al-Talaq, on hazl and hikayah. A joke counts; a quotation that addresses no one does not.
