Guide

The Islamic date in Pakistan, who sets it and why it can differ

Today's Hijri date in Pakistan is shown at the top of this page. It is worked out in your browser for the current calendar day in Pakistan, using Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar, the most widely used reference. In Pakistan, the date used for worship comes from: Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The method: local sighting every month. That can put the local date a day away from Umm al-Qura, so the page has a one-tap adjustment.

Who decides the Islamic date in Pakistan

In Pakistan every Hijri month begins with a local sighting. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, under the federal Ministry of Religious Affairs, meets on the evening of the 29th of each month with zonal and district committees and technical members from SUPARCO and the Meteorological Department. Only its chairman announces the new month. A federal law passed by the National Assembly now bars private committees from announcing a sighting before the official one.

Is it the same date as in Saudi Arabia?

Because the crescent is seen later in South Asia than further west, Pakistan's months often begin a day after the Umm al-Qura calendar, though on many months the dates match. If the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee began this month a day later than Saudi Arabia, choose −1 day and every date on the page moves with it.

When the Islamic date changes

The Islamic day begins at sunset, not at midnight: the night comes before its day. So after Maghrib in Pakistan, the Hijri date has already moved on by one, even though phones and calendars change it at midnight. This is why the first taraweeh of Ramadan is prayed on the evening before the first fast, and why "the night of the 27th" is the evening before the 27th day.

Following another country's sighting

Hanafi position

In the main transmitted position of the school, differences in the horizon (ikhtilaf al-matali) are not taken into account: a sighting established in one land binds others once it reaches them through a reliable route. Many later Hanafi scholars allowed distant lands to follow their own sighting. In practice, follow the body your local masjid follows, so the community fasts and celebrates together.1

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
Each region follows its own sighting, because horizons differ (the report of Kurayb, Sahih Muslim 1087).
Maliki, Hanbali
A sighting anywhere binds all Muslims who learn of it, like the main Hanafi position.
  1. Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, Kitab al-Sawm, on ikhtilaf al-matali; al-Zaylai, Tabyin al-Haqa'iq. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
  2. Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, press releases on the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee (mora.gov.pk).
  3. National Assembly of Pakistan, the Pakistan Ruet-e-Hilal bill (na.gov.pk).
