Guide
Today's Hijri date in the United States is shown at the top of this page. It is worked out in your browser for the current calendar day in the United States, using Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar, the most widely used reference. In the United States, the date used for worship comes from: No single body: FCNA calculation or local sighting. The method: calculation (FCNA) or local sighting, by masjid. That can put the local date a day away from Umm al-Qura, so the page has a one-tap adjustment.
There is no national religious authority in the United States, so the date depends on your community. The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) fixes the months in advance by astronomical calculation, and ISNA and many masjids follow its dates. Many other masjids, especially Hanafi ones, wait for a local sighting of the crescent in North America, for example through the Central Hilal Committee of North America. A smaller number follow Saudi Arabia's announcement.
FCNA's calculated dates usually match the Umm al-Qura calendar or differ by a day. Communities that wait for a local sighting are more often a day after Saudi Arabia, because the crescent can be too young to see on the 29th. Check with your own masjid, and use the adjustment on this page if your community began the month a day later.
The Islamic day begins at sunset, not at midnight: the night comes before its day. So after Maghrib in the United States, the Hijri date has already moved on by one, even though phones and calendars change it at midnight. This is why the first taraweeh of Ramadan is prayed on the evening before the first fast, and why "the night of the 27th" is the evening before the 27th day.
Expected dates by the Umm al-Qura calendar, with the date if the month begins a day later in the United States.
| Event | Umm al-Qura | A day later |
|---|---|---|
| Ramadan begins (1 Ramadan 1448) | Mon 8 Feb 2027 | Tue 9 Feb 2027 |
| Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal) | Tue 9 Mar 2027 | Wed 10 Mar 2027 |
| Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah) | Sat 15 May 2027 | Sun 16 May 2027 |
| Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul Hijjah) | Sun 16 May 2027 | Mon 17 May 2027 |
| Islamic New Year 1449 | Sun 6 Jun 2027 | Mon 7 Jun 2027 |
| Ashura (10 Muharram 1449) | Tue 15 Jun 2027 | Wed 16 Jun 2027 |
In the main transmitted position of the school, differences in the horizon (ikhtilaf al-matali) are not taken into account: a sighting established in one land binds others once it reaches them through a reliable route. Many later Hanafi scholars allowed distant lands to follow their own sighting. In practice, follow the body your local masjid follows, so the community fasts and celebrates together.1

Questions
The date at the top of this page is today's Hijri date for the current day in the United States, by the Umm al-Qura calendar. If the month began a day later in the United States, choose −1 day. After sunset the Islamic date has already moved on to the next day.
No single one. The Fiqh Council of North America calculates the months in advance, and ISNA and many masjids follow it. Many other masjids wait for a local sighting of the crescent in North America, and some follow Saudi Arabia.
Often, but not always. Calculated (FCNA) dates usually match Saudi Arabia's. Masjids that wait for a local sighting are sometimes a day later.
By the Umm al-Qura calendar, Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, with the first taraweeh on the night of Sunday 7 February. Where the month starts by a later sighting it may begin on Tuesday 9 February. In the United States, follow your local masjid.
Use the converter on this page. Pick a Gregorian date to see the Hijri date, or enter a Hijri day, month and year to see the Gregorian date. It uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, and the −1 and +1 day setting moves the results with your local sighting.
